When You Can’t Refuse Food
By Thomas | January 4, 2008
The New Years holiday is big in Japan. People get together with their families, eat special New Years food and visit the shrine. It last for about a week and even the banks close.
So when New Years rolls around, it’s time to visit the in-laws. Now, over time my in-laws have figured out what I like to eat. They know I like beef. They know I like to drink Coke. They often take me out to eat yakiniku. That’s really awesome of them I think!
What they don’t know is that I’m participating in the TwoFatBrothers.com 2008 Weight Loss Challenge and hence on a diet. This is what was waiting for me at the in-laws house yesterday:
Yakiniku! and Coke! Aahhhh!
Now, nobody in my wife’s family drinks Coke. They bought that bottle specially for me because they knew I was coming over for lunch. I can’t refuse to drink it. I can’t refuse to eat the yakiniku either.
What do you do when you find yourself in a situation like this? I’ll tell you what I did. I told them politely about my diet and then I ate the food and drank the Coke anyway. They know about my diet now so in the future they won’t have to buy Coke for me. And I cheated for one day on my diet to avoid a social blunder. That’s it.
If you find yourself in a situation where you are faced with a choice like this, I say go ahead and break your diet and then inform the people involved about your dieting goals. Then they will know for the future and you can feel better about refusing next time.
My weight was at an all time low this morning, so apparently no harm was done.

You did the right thing. One thing that you have to watch out for when you do indulge is not to let that ruin your day. It’s natural to want to eat foods you like, whether it’s soft drinks, steaks or a glass full of bacon drippings, but don’t use that as an excuse to not exercise that day if you normally would have or eat another crappy meal because you’ve “already screwed your diet up.” Focus on progress, not perfection. In fact, so long as you don’t eat too many calories the rest of the day, it may not hurt you at all. Most experts will recommend that you pig out one meal every once in a while so you can remind your body that it’s not starving. By eating what you want from time to time, you will ramp your metabolism back up and you’ll lose even more weight. Don’t beat yourself up if you find yourself in a pinch and end up eating a ton of calories, just stay the course and you’ll be fine.

Thanks for the support. I didn’t let it ruin my day. I actually felt good because later they brought out tasty snacks and I was able to resist eating them.
Since I started my diet on Jan. 1st and also my exercise regimen my weight has been consistently down each morning. I can probably afford to indulge every now and then.

That’s awesome. I have a feeling that you are going to blast right through 205.

I hope so! That would be great if I reached my goal easily. I still have a ways to go though.
