Overeating: My Biggest Obstacle To Losing Weight
By Thomas | January 3, 2008
My biggest obstacle to losing weight is overeating.
I drink lots of Cokes, eat lots of chocolate/sugary foods and eat snacks during the day, all of this when I’m not really hungry. For meals, I fill my plate to the brim and often go back for seconds or thirds. Sometimes I eat dessert for lunch! Clearly I do a lot of eating that I don’t have to do.
To win the 2008 Weight Loss Challenge, I will surely have to stop this habit of eating when I’m not hungry. To do that, I first have to determine why I eat when I’m not hungry. Then I have to learn to recognize when I’m about to eat something I don’t need and train myself to do something else instead.
I found this article about recognizing your eating habits last night. It says:
To become aware of your eating habits, keep track of situations in which you find yourself craving unhealthy foods. Write them down in a notebook or on your weekly menus. Keep a list of what, when and why you eat for a few days. See if any relationships or patterns emerge. Ask yourself if you tend to eat when you’re bored, angry, tired, anxious, stressed, depressed or socially pressured.
Starting now, I will do exactly this.
Of the top of my head, with no data, I think that I overeat when I am bored and anxious. Also, now that I think about it, I often couple certain activities with eating. I almost always have an unhealthy snack and a Coke when I watch a DVD for example.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that I really need to learn to identify what triggers me to overeat. That’s my mission for this week. Once I get this obstacle out of the way, the Weight Loss Challenge Championship is as good as mine.
Here are some short articles I found on the topic:
- Get in touch with your eating habits
- How to stop emotional eating
- Support weight loss with a food and exercise diary

Good luck with all this!
I have a dreadful habit of eating when I’m bored too. And at the minute it sucks even more as I’m day 2 into quitting cigarettes. Ouch.
I don’t know if you’ve heard of this, but some people tend to overeat because they can’t tell the difference between hunger and thirst, so when they’re really thirsty, they eat instead.
*I want a ciggy so bad…*
